Our Programs

  • Environment

Between the mid-1980s to 2009, up to 450 hectares of mangrove cover in Kenya was reportedly lost every year. Presently it is estimated that 40% of the remaining mangrove areas in the country are degraded.

  • Waste Management

We have a passion for a clean neighborhood. Since inception, we have been involved in waste management activities from waste collection, resource recovery, and advocacy for a clean environment.

  • Empowerment

Big Ship is the steward in promoting local ownership of the environmental agenda. We do this by developing Environment Ambassadors to propel environmental campaigns in future.

Our Projects

  • Adopt A Site

This is a people centered program where meaningful partnership is made between the forest communities, and stakeholders towards promoting sustainable conservation.

  • RECO / Resource Collection Project

Poor waste management in Mombasa County is an entrenched problem with long term effects on communities and their environment. This comes down to poor physical planning and lack of working recycling approaches.

  • Boresha Jamii Project – Urban Resilience

Meanwhile Big Ship also seeks to promote empowerment of local communities, both urban and rural poor, targeting the youth, women & other marginalized groups.

  • VIMP Program

Volunteership and Internship Mentorship Program (VIMP) is a career development and mentorship program that creates an ecosystem of practitioners in different fields of practice to interact and practically build skills and knowledge.

  • Flagship project: #BringBackTudorCreek

To stop poor practices that makes communities vulnerable to Climate change effects, the #BringBackTudorCreek campaign promotes multi stakeholder engagements that includes local communities, corporates and duty bearers.

  • Advocacy

Big Ship continues to lobby state and non-state actors to provide structural and policy support to the programs related areas.
